Adeliia Faizullina:

Weaving Lace from Frost (2025)

For string quartet

Duration: 7'15"

Written for and Premiered by Telegraph Quartet January 27, 2025 at Brown University Grant Recital Hall, Providence, RI.

Program Note:

Weaving Lace from Frost is inspired by the winter season and the activities I associate with it. My memories take me back to my childhood when I spent a great deal of time with my grandmother, Mariam. Especially during winter, she would occupy herself by making socks and gloves for us, weaving wool that she crafted herself. I vividly remember the steady, hypnotizing, and quiet "click-click" of her work, a sound that seemed to freeze time for me.

For this composition, I imagine the bows as needles or metal pins for weaving, intertwining and stretching the sound as they delicately pass over from one string to another. Additionally, the piece contains moments reminiscent of children’s games and songs. Short motives repeat, often within a small interval of two or three notes, creating textures that are sometimes monotonous and sometimes frozen, evoking associations with folk melodies.
